Feature Request: Privacy-Friendly Auto ECS Based on Device IP
yesterday by Tim
Hi Control D Team,
I'd like to suggest an enhancement to the current ECS implementation.
Current Situation:
To get more accurate geo-relevant DNS results, users currently need to use the "Custom" option and manually configure their subnet ranges. This can be cumbersome, especially for users with dynamic IPs or those who aren't familiar with subnetting.
Proposed Enhancement:
Add a "Privacy-Friendly Auto" option that automatically derives a truncated subnet from the user's actual device IP (e.g., /24 for IPv4), similar to what NextDNS and AdGuard DNS have implemented:
- NextDNS: https://medium.com/nextdns/how-we-made-dns-both-fast-and-private-with-ecs-4970d70401e5
- AdGuard DNS: https://adguard-dns.io/en/blog/privacy-friendly-edns-client-subnet.html
Benefits:
- Better accuracy — More location-relevant DNS responses based on actual client location
- Privacy preserved — Only a truncated subnet is shared, not the full IP address
- Zero configuration — Eliminates the need for users to manually input custom subnet ranges
Thanks for considering this improvement!
