I set up Private DNS on my Pixel manually and all good. However, I need to be able to deal with captive portals and the app was required. I installed the app and then it wanted to set up a VPN service which then knocked out the Internet. Do I need to have the virtual VPN running, or can I stick with the Private DNS? I'd sooner have it all run silently, so avoid using the VPN service, but not sure if that would allow the app to manage captive portals or not.

If I am using Private DNS, then the filtering works and there are no notifications, but the app shows as not configured. Will the captive portal management work in this state please?
