Control D without installation w/ pfsense

Is it necessary to install ctrld on our pfSense firewall to access the features in the web GUI?

I thought we could simply point it to a custom DNS name and still use the features built into the web GUI. I couldn’t find any guide explaining that process.

I'd rather not install some software on a netgate firewall for example.
