Disabled ControlDNS for now
Over the past weekend, I had multiple issues that appear to have been caused by ControlDNS. In 2024 some of us still use IRC connections via mIRC and on Dec 7th my connection to a server that I have been using since 1999 went down. I thought nothing of it then because services had issues in the past. That is until I contacted some via email informing them of the issue and finding out they had no problem. Nothing in the block list showed any connection being blocked for this IRC server. I disabled all filters and that did not have an effect. Only when I put in a custom rule to allow connection to the server was I able to connect.
My online backup service, IDrive, had been having issues since Dec 6th with both it's real-time and scheduled backups failing. Again nothing was showing up in the block list for this service. When I used the controld.exe to disable ControlDNS on this Windows 10 box, the backup software started functioning again.
What frustrated me and caused me to disable ContolDNS entirely is that there was no indication that the issues I was seeing were due to ControlDNS blocking connections for both of these services.
